You may be feeling desperate now that you are facing the consequences of having a foreclosure on your credit report. Don't panic! You CAN legally remove a foreclosure from your credit reports.
The Bad News About Having a Foreclosure on Your Credit Report
A foreclosure will stay on your credit reports for 7-10 years. It almost always keeps you from being approved for any line of credit. The impact of a foreclosure on your credit score is that it will drop 100-400 points. A foreclosure on your credit is similar to being blacklisted by banks and mortgage lenders.
Realize you are not alone, there are many individuals that have foreclosures on the credit too. This does not mean you are an unworthy individual, all it does mean is that circumstances beyond your control occurred. (Now you just need to get back on the road to improve your credit.)

If you want to try do-it-yourself credit repair, then read on for a few pointers. The only danger with self-help credit repair and foreclosures is the danger of being red-flagged by the credit bureaus. Once you are red-flagged, it makes removing a foreclosure much more difficult and costly.
Foreclosure Removal for Do-it-Yourselfers
The first step is to dispute the foreclosure listing with the credit bureau. This is done through the dispute process, where you dispute then foreclosure directly with the credit bureau. A foreclosure was likely placed on your report with all three bureaus - Experian, Equifax, and Transunion.
A "valid" dispute letter must be sent to the credit bureaus. In this letter you must explain why the foreclosure is incorrect and should be removed. Examples of reasons include; information is wrong, item is out of date, not my account, account paid in full and etc.
The credit bureau should conduct an investigation into the bad credit listing. They will contact the lender and verify the debt and it's accuracy. If the listing can not be verified then it must be removed from your credit report. (That is your best case scenario!)
If you lending institution was hit hard or went under during the housing crisis you have a very good chance of having the foreclosure removed from your credit.
If the bureaus verified the foreclosure, then your options are immediately limited. I suggest investing in a credit repair service.
